Gold Rani Haar Necklaces

(गोल्ड रानी हार नेकलेसेस)

The gold rani haar — the queen's necklace — is the long one, falling past the bust towards the waist, often in several strands and finished with a pendant. We make it in kundan, polki and plain gold, to wear alone or beneath a choker.

Long necklaces

Rani haar, sita haar or mala?

Three long necklaces that are often mixed up, and what sets each apart.

Rani haarरानी हार

The queen's necklace: long, often in two or more strands, with a pendant or a broad centre where it falls.

In Rajasthan it is worn under a kundan choker or aad, so the two lengths make one bridal look. See our Emerald Ranihaar, set with emeralds.

Sita haarसीता हार

The Bengali bride's long necklace — layered strands of fine chain or repeated motifs, worn long over the sari.

Many jewellers use the two names for the same kind of long, layered piece; the difference is mostly one of region.

Malaमाला

A single long strand of beads, gold balls or one motif repeated — like the South Indian mango mala.

Lighter than a rani haar, and just as often worn on its own.

Length

Where a rani haar falls, inch by inch

Measured end to end. The standard scale calls about 30 inches opera length — the rani haar's natural home.

  1. Above the bust

    24 inches

A short rani haar. Under a choker it leaves a clear gap; on its own it suits a high neckline.

  2. At the bust

    28 to 30 inches

The classic length, where the pendant sits in the open front of a lehenga blouse.

  3. Towards the waist

    32 to 36 inches

Dramatic, and the most gold. Best for a tall bride, or layered with a shorter strand.

Getting the length right

  • Try it against the blouse

Where the pendant lands depends on the neckline. Hold a ribbon at the length you want against the blouse you will wear, before choosing.

  • Leave room for the choker

If it goes under a choker, the rani haar should start clearly below it rather than crowd it — at least a hand's width between them.

  • Count the strands

More strands, more gold and more presence; one or two strands still read as a rani haar if the pendant is strong, and pearls strung between the gold make it lighter.

  • Mind your height

The same 30 inches falls lower on a petite bride than on a tall one. Measure from your own collarbone, not from a photograph.

Questions

Rani haar questions

Ask a question

How long is a rani haar?

Usually 24 to 36 inches, falling from above the bust to about the waist; around 30 inches is the classic length. We make it to the length you ask for, measured from your own collarbone.

Can a rani haar be worn without a choker?

Yes. On its own it suits a high neckline, where a choker would have nowhere to sit; with a deep neckline, a choker above it fills the gap.

How do I keep a rani haar from tangling?

Store it flat and full length, the strands laid side by side, and put it on last so it isn't caught while you dress.
