Carat to Ratti Calculator

1 carat = 1.10 ratti, and 1 ratti = 0.91 carat. To turn carats into ratti, divide by 0.91; to turn ratti into carats, multiply by 0.91. That is the pakki ratti of about 182 mg that gem dealers and astrologers use; the goldsmith's sunari ratti weighs only 121.5 mg, so the calculator shows both.

Pakki ratti, sunari ratti: one name, three weights

Search "1 ratti in carat" and you will find 0.91, 0.90 and 0.61. None is a typo — they are different rattis, and on the same 7 ratti stone they differ by more than two carats. The ratti has moved before: in 1665 Tavernier wrote it down as ⅞ of a carat (Ratti, Wikipedia).

Pakki rattiपक्की रत्ती

182 mg · 0.91 ct

The gem trade's ratti, and the one astrologers prescribe in: one and a half goldsmith's rattis, 182.25 mg, rounded to 0.91 carat. 7 ratti = 6.37 ct.

The rounded ratti

180 mg · 0.90 ct

Some sellers round the pakki ratti down to 0.90 carat, so a sava 5 ratti stone comes out at 4.73 ct instead of 4.78 ct. 7 ratti = 6.30 ct.

Sunari rattiसुनारी रत्ती

121.5 mg · 0.61 ct

The goldsmith's ratti, also called kacchi: 8 to a masha, 96 to a tola. A third lighter than the gem ratti. 7 ratti = 4.25 ct.

Sava 5 ratti in carat, and other spoken weights

A gemstone prescription is written the way weight is spoken in Hindi, and each of these words moves the number by a quarter or a half. Turn the words into a number first, then into carats.

  • Savaसवा

    plus a quarter. Sava 5 ratti = 5.25 ratti = 4.78 ct (3.19 ct in sunari ratti)

  • Sadheसाढ़े

    plus a half. Sadhe 6 ratti = 6.5 ratti = 5.92 ct (3.95 ct in sunari ratti)

  • Pauneपौने

    less a quarter. Paune 8 ratti = 7.75 ratti = 7.05 ct (4.71 ct in sunari ratti)

  • Dhaiढाई

two and a half. Dhai ratti = 2.5 ratti = 2.28 ct (1.52 ct in sunari ratti)

Ask a question

How many ratti are in 1 carat?

1.10 ratti, in the gem trade's pakki ratti of 0.91 carat (1 ÷ 0.91 = 1.099). Counted in the goldsmith's lighter ratti of 121.5 mg, the same carat is 1.65 ratti — which is how two shops can quote different ratti weights for one stone.

How many carats is 5 ratti?

4.55 carats in pakki ratti (5 × 0.91), or 4.50 ct where a seller rounds the ratti to 0.90. Sava 5 ratti, the weight most often written, is 5.25 ratti: 4.78 ct.

What is 1 ratti in grams?

0.182 g (182 mg) for the gem ratti, and 0.1215 g for the goldsmith's. A carat is exactly 0.2 g, so either ratti is a little lighter than a carat.

Why do some websites say 1 ratti is 0.9 carat?

They round the 182 mg ratti down to 180 mg. That is 0.01 carat less per ratti: small on one ratti, but 0.09 ct on a 9 ratti stone. If you pay by weight, ask for the carat figure on the bill.

How many ratti make a tola?

96. The old table runs 8 ratti to a masha and 12 masha to a tola of 11.664 g, so this is the goldsmith's ratti of 121.5 mg, not the gem ratti.

Are gemstone lab reports in carat or ratti?

Carat. A lab such as GTL Jaipur weighs the loose stone in carats to two decimals, and any ratti figure is worked out from that. Enter the report's carat weight above to read it in ratti.
