Gold Tops Earrings

(गोल्ड टॉप्स ईयररिंग्स)

Gold tops earrings are the pair you put on and forget: small, flat on the lobe, with nothing to catch a dupatta. We make them in plain gold, kundan and meenakari — little flowers, single stones and small domes.

Everyday

What are gold tops?

In India, tops is the everyday word for stud earrings: a small motif that sits flat on the lobe, held by a post and a back. They are the first earrings most girls are given, and the pair most women wear every day.

Because they are small, tops are a good place for the details we're known for — one kundan-set stone, or a flower filled with meena.

The back

Screw back, push back or hook?

On a pair you wear every day, the back matters more than the front. These are the three you will be offered.

Screw backपेच

The post is threaded, and the back — the pech — turns onto it. It stays put through sleep, prayers and a toddler's grip.

Slower to put on, and the thread should be checked now and then for wear.

Push back

A butterfly clip that slides onto a smooth post. Quick, and fine for light tops.

It loosens with time; squeeze its two loops a little closer to firm it up.

Hook

A wire that passes through the ear and hangs, with no back at all. Best for light drops, not for tops.

Can slip out of a large piercing — add a small rubber stopper.

Choosing tops to wear every day

  • Smooth edges

Open filigree traps soap and catches on fine cloth. A closed, smooth motif is easier to live with.

  • No wider than the lobe

On a small lobe a large top tilts forward. Choose a motif about the width of the lobe itself.

  • A post that doesn't bend

High-karat gold is soft. Check that the post is sturdy enough not to bend when the pair is pulled off in a hurry.

  • A child's first pair

Ears are often pierced in early childhood — karnavedha is one of the traditional samskaras. Keep the first pair small and plain, with a screw back, and no stones to loosen.

Questions

Questions about gold tops

Ask a question

Can 1 gram of gold make a pair of earrings?

A very small plain pair, yes; most plain gold tops weigh one to three grams a pair. Stones, kundan and meena each need gold round them, so a set pair weighs more, and its making charge is higher for the handwork.

What tops suit a second or third piercing?

Smaller ones than the first pair: a single stone or a tiny flower, with a short post, so the row of earrings steps down in size up the ear. A push back is fine at that size; keep a screw back for the main pair, which carries the most weight.

What is the difference between tops and studs?

Very little: tops is the name used across India for small stud earrings. Some keep 'studs' for a single stone and call anything with a motif 'tops'.

Can I wear gold tops in the shower?

Plain gold tops, yes. Take off tops set with kundan or meena — water and soap work into the setting over time and dull the enamel.
